Behind the Tail: My Life as a Professional Mermaid

When people first hear that I’m a professional mermaid, their reaction is usually a mix of amazement and curiosity.

“Wait — that’s your job?!” Yes, it is! And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I'm Mermaid Tarielle, full-time mermaid performer, ocean ambassador, and business owner. I’ve made a career out of swimming in glittering tails, performing at events across the globe, and helping people reconnect with their sense of wonder.

But becoming a professional mermaid isn’t just sparkles and seashells, it’s also training, travel, hustle, and heart.

So today, I want to take you behind the scenes of my world, what it really means to live a life underwater (and above it, too).

🧜‍♀️ How It All Began

My journey started with a deep love for the ocean and a fascination with fantasy. Like many kids, I was obsessed with mermaids, but unlike most, I never let the dream go. I began crafting tails, learning underwater performance techniques, and eventually started performing at children’s events, beaches, and festivals.

Over time, I refined my brand, invested in creating high-end tails, developed choreography, and learned how to market myself, and soon a small mermaid empire was forming.

🌊 A Day in the Life of a Real Mermaid

No two days are the same in this job! Some days I’m:

• Performing in an aquarium tank or luxury pool

• Swimming ashore to surprise kids at a beach party

• Collaborating with a company or photographer on mermaid content

• Running my business behind the scenes: writing emails, editing footage, organizing costumes, booking venues, and building out creative proposals

My job combines athleticism, performance, and entrepreneurship, not to mention waterproof makeup mastery!

📍 Where My Tail Has Taken Me

Being a professional mermaid has brought me to places I could never have imagined:

• Performing on national TV in Beauty and the Geek Australia

• Swimming alongside sea creatures in the tank at SeaLife Berlin

• Creating magical moments for tourists in Egypt’s Red Sea with SeaSerpent Cruises

• Touring Australia at festivals, luxury, corporate and private events

💼 Yes, It’s a Business Too

Behind the glitter is a fully functioning entertainment business. I manage bookings, travel logistics, client proposals, costumes, and even other performers through my growing company, Mertopia Mermaids.

I also collaborate with brands and businesses to produce experiential marketing experiences and offer Instagram collaborations, brand shoots, and eco-educational performances.

📣 What Keeps Me Going

What makes it all worthwhile? The look on a child’s face when they meet a “real” mermaid. The parents who thank me for bringing magic into their kid’s life. The underwater moments when time disappears and I’m just floating — weightless and fully immersed.

But also: the connections. I’ve met incredible creatives, performers, conservationists, and fans who remind me why fantasy and storytelling still matter.
